About

I’m Aaron Miler, a native of Portland, Oregon, and VP of Engineering at ROH. We build a financial infrastructure platform for the hospitality industry.

Work

I’ve been tinkering with technology most of my life, but started building software professionally in the early 2010s. Most of it in Ruby, all of it full stack.

Sitting in a player/coach role leading my team. I spend most of my mornings on calls with my Eastern Time colleagues, planning initiatives and designing features. Then get some heads down time in the afternoons to build out foundational tooling, and drive the team forward.

For my remote teams, I believe in high trust, high autonomy, and collaboration in design. My goal is always to be a force multiplier for my team. If they’re better, I’m better.

Side projects

Building things has always been something I’m drawn to.

Exploring LLMs with actual apps for the house has been fun. Meal planner, fitness/wellness coach, personal assistant to sit over my shoulder in meetings. Not just text based interactions, but apps built around the data they collect.

Hood View Ciderworks

For 5 years, my home was a licensed winery in Oregon, where my wife and I owned and operated a hard cider company. As someone who built their career in the digital space, there was something really satisfying about manufacturing a physical product.

Growing a small business was a wonderfully difficult challenge. When you’re doing everything top to bottom, you think about every action and how it plays out. There’s nobody to hand a problem to. Branding, brewing, marketing, sales, all of it was ours.

It changed what I pay attention to. I stopped asking just what a change does for the product, and started asking what it does for the business and the people paying for it. That’s carried into everything I’ve done since.
